Abstract

758,499. Windscreen washers. TRICO PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Oct. 5. 1954 [Oct. 19, 1953], No. 28671/54. Class 138(1) A windscreen cleaning system for a motor vehicle 1 Fig. 1. has a primary source of suction derived from the intake manifold 3 of the vehicle engine 2, a washer pump 12 for delivering liquid through nozzles 14 on to the windshield 8, an engine-driven auxiliary source of motion (e.g. crankcase ventilating pump 6), and a valve mechanism 11 to which the primary and auxiliary sources of suction, the pump 12 and a wiper motor 5 are connected and by which the washer pump is automatically placed in communication with the source of suction of greater magnitude, when the system is in operation. Referring to Fig. 2, the valve mechanism 11 comprises casing parts 17. 17<SP>1</SP>, of which 17 has two chambers 21, 21<SP>1</SP> and 17<SP>1</SP> is provided with a passageway 24 connected to bores 26, 26<SP>1</SP> and a nipple 25. A flexible diaphragm 18 has flaps 27. 27<SP>1</SP> to co-operate with the bores 26, 26<SP>1</SP>. The chamber 21 is connected by tubes 4, 4', with the manifold 3 and motor 5, whilst the chamber 21<SP>1</SP> is connected by tubes 7, 7<SP>1</SP> with the pump 6 and the motor 5. The nipple 25 is connected to the washer pump 12 by a tube 13, and the pump may be of the type disclosed in Specification 757.231. When the magnitude of the manifold suction is greater than that of the pump 6, i.e. at low engine speeds, the flap 27 adopts the dotted line position since the pressure in the chamber 21 is less than the atmospheric pressure normally existing in the passage 24. With the bore 26 uncovered the pressure in the passageway 24 will drop and as the degree of vacuum in the chamber 21<SP>1</SP> operated by the pump 6 is normally less than that in the chamber 21 the flap 27<SP>1</SP> is moved into the dotted line position to prevent oil being sucked-up out of the crankcase. When the vehicle is accelerated the manifold suction decreases and the pressure at the intake side of the pump 6 drops, due to the increased engine speed. Conseauently the flaps reverse and adopt the full line positions, the pump 12 then being actuatable by the suction of the pump 6. Since in this instance the valve 27 is closed petrol will not be sucked out of the manifold 3.
