Abstract

558,378. Bending sheets. TATE OF LEEDS, Ltd., and WADDINGTON, S. Nov. 13, 1942. No. 16074. [Class 83 (iv)] A machine for bending sheet metal, such as aluminium or mild steel, particularly for making fairings for the leading edges of aircraft wings and tail planes, consists of a former round which the sheet is bent by pair of descending rollers independently spring-loaded at both ends. The former may be semi-elliptical in cross-section and may be of slightly less size than the size of the facing required so as to allow for the natural spring of the material. The wooden, metal or metal covered wooden former 1 is mounted on the 'base 2 of the press and the rollers 3 are canned by spring arms 5 from a head which is operated by a hand wheel, power or hydraulic mechanism to force the rollers over the sheet metal around the former. The springs 5 will automatically allow for the tapering of the roller bars in the event of using a tapered former. The springs may be adjustable. The part 2 is adjustably mounted and secured in position by a peg 6x inserted in one of a number of holes.
