Abstract

558,155. Pyrophoric lighters. SANDOR, B., and MECHANICAL LIGHTERS & ENGINEERING, CO., Ltd. June 17, 1942, No. 8283. [Class 75 (iii)] The steel striker 2 on which the flint of a pyrophoric lighter is rubbed is:provided with a central wick passage 4 and is formed with peripheral open-mouthed slots 3 to admit air to enhance the flame. In the construction shown the striker is mounted by a plastic heat-resisting tube 5 in a fuel container 1 fitted with a removable cap carrying a flint 10. The tube 5 is filled with wadding and is closed at the bottom by a plug 7 formed with a capillary passage or passages 8. In another construction the striker is moulded into a plastic container which is open at the bottom and is threaded to receive identical top and bottom caps carrying flints. In a third construction the striker is integral with the container and formed with bayonet slots to receive the cap. The wick support may be fixed to or detachably secured in the cap and may be provided with spring clips to engage a separate spirit container. Fig. 4 shows a steel formed by a base 13 having acute-angled upstanding ends 14, the spaces between the ends forming the slots 3.
