Abstract

558,032. Substitute for glass. LUMSDEN & MACKENZIE, Ltd., and GARRETT, C. March 4, 1942, No. 2853. [Class 140] A fire-resistant, non-splinterable and blastproof substitute for glass is formed by applying to woven wire, wire netting, welded fabricated net, perforated sheet metal or other reticulated metallic material a solution of incompletely polymerized synthetic resin with or without a plasticizer to film the metal, further polymerizing the resin and then applying to one or both sides a continuous film or coating consisting solely of a transparent thermoplastic synthetic resin or solely of such resin and a plasticizer, except that colouring agents may sometimes be added, the resin being applied in the absence of a solvent by the actions of heat and pressure. The incompletely polymerized resin may be urea formaldehyde or melamine formaldehyde, and the final coating resin may be polyvinyl chloride. A three or four roller mangle with a micrometer adjustment may be used. Specification 466,490, is referred to.
