Abstract
557,669. Rotary furnaces. STERN, M. Nov. 2, 1942, No. 15404. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1941. [Class 51 (ii)] Light metal scrap, particularly magnesium scrap in the form of borings, turnings or chippings. is treated for the removal of oil by charging it into an indirectly heated furnace so that the oil is liberated by contact with the heated furnace wall, while a cooling medium such as air is introduced into the furnace to cool the charge and carry away the oil vapour. About 80 per cent of the oil is removed from the scrap by centrifuging before it is fed to the furnace. Apparatus for carrying out the treatment is shown in the Figure and comprises a rotary indirectly heated kiln 1 fed with scrap from a hopper A and supplied with air which enters by an inlet 8 a discharge hopper 6 before entering the lower end of the furnace. The air carries away the oil vapour to a chamber 10 and stack 11.
