Abstract

557,358. Determining dimensions of materials. BRUYNE, N. A. DE. April 14, 1942, No. 4920. [Class 37] The amount of glue or other coating material per unit area of coated surface is measured by applying at least one pair of electrodes to the coating and by means of a bridge circuit comparing an electrical characteristic of the coating material between the electrodes with the corresponding characteristic of a predetermined amount of the coating material. Apparatus for determining the thickness of a coating of glue on veneer in the manufacture of plywood by measuring the resistance of the coating comprises two cylindrical copper electrodes I.O., Fig. 2, spaced apart concentrically by insulating spacers S, the outer cylinder being attached to an insulating base. The lower ends af the cylinders are in one plane so that when in position on a glue-coated veneer they make uniform contact therewith. The upper ends of the cylinders are provided with terminals by which the coating between the cylinders is connected in one arm of a Wheatstone bridge. The comparison cell, Fig. 3, comprises a glass base G and an upright portion having a transverse bore H extending therethrough from end to end, a central vertical bore V passing into the transverse bore, and a smaller vertical bore V on each side of the bore V. The ends of the transverse bore H are closed by plugs P, the central vertical bore V enabling the transverse bore to be filled with glue. The bores v receive the ends of wire leads W forming electrodes which connect the coating material in the cell into an arm of the Wheatstone bridge. The bridge is supplied with an alternating current to avoid polarization effects, and is balanced by moving a sliding contact along a resistance provided with a scale indicating the amount of glue per unit area or the thickness of the layer. The various elements may be assembled in a common case to which numbers of pairs of electrodes as shown in Fig. 2 connected in parallel are fitted as feet. A valve amplifier may be inserted in the bridge circuit in place of the galvanometer and the null point determined by means of a small cathode-ray tube.
