Abstract

557,290. Purifying contaminated mineral oils and waxes. FIFE, J. G. (Buckeye Laboratories Inc.). Jan. 26, 1942, No. 1077. [Class 91] Contaminants are removed from a refined or used mineral oil or wax by heating the oil or wax in admixture with a solid adsorbent material in a closed container under vacuum, the mixture being mechanically mixed and agitated during treatment and the temperature being below the flash point of the finally treated oil or wax. The low boiling impurities are driven off and the higher boiling impurities adsorbed by the adsorbent material, which latter is finally separated from the purified oil or wax such as by means of a filter. Bone char. carbon black or Fuller's earth may be used in the proportion of to 40 per cent. by weight of the oil or wax. The agitator may comprise a motor driven pump or a turbine impellor. The temperature under vacuum is preferably in the range of about 50-150‹ F below the flash point of the finally treated oil or wax. the vacuum being preferably from 28 to 30 inches of mercury. Water or steam may be added to the charge in the proportion of “-1 1b. per gallon of the oil or wax and also an alkali, such as potassium or calcium hydroxide, in the proportion of 0.02-1 per cent. by weight. The period of treatment may range from “-1 hour. The filter may comprise filter paper, glass cloth, glass wool or metallic screens with or without a diatomaceous filter aid. The invention is particularly applicable to used lubricating or insulating oils.
