Abstract

557,005. Thermionic valves and circuits; electron oscillators and multipliers. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). June 5, 1941, No. 7140. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] In ultra high-frequency amplifiers wherein the electron transit time is greater than the oscillation period to be amplified the ends of the output impedance are connected to two electrodes located in the path of the electrons and at a distance apart so that the transit time of the electrons between these electrodes is less than half a period of the oscillations to be amplified ; in a pentode where the mesh of the suppressor grid is wide the electrodes considered are the anode and screen grid and in one construction for use with wave lengths below 1 m. the distance between these is less than 3 mm. and the suppressor is shaped as a window. With a distance of 0.8 mm. the minimum wavelength would be 6 cm. For tubes using secondary emission a screen grid 11 is placed between the control grid 10 and the secondary emission electrode 12 ;the output impedance 16 is connected in push-pull to the anode 8 and secondary electrode 12 the centre of the impedance being earthed. A screen 17 earthed for high frequencies is placed between the anode and secondary electrode 12 the distances being such that the electron transit time between the screen and either of these electrodes is less than half a period of the oscillations to be amplified. In a modification where the distance between the anode and secondary electrode is great two screens are used one at the requisite distance from each electrode. With more than one secondary emitting electrode a screen grid is used with each one that serves as output; to earth the screens a Lecher wire system is used, those screens and emitting electrodes not serving as output being connected to voltage nodes. Electric or magnetic focusing is used to maintain uniform transit time. Means to reduce the input and output damping are used. Specifications 495,839 and 499,218 are referred to.
