Abstract

556,992. Frequency modulation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. July 30, 1942, No. 10693. Convention date, July 31, 1941. [Class 40 (v)] A frequency modulation detector comprises a valve with two control grids, the incoming wave being applied to one grid and the other being connected through a modulation-frequency impedance to the cathode ; voltages at modulation frequency arise on the second grid and are amplified across a load impedance in the anode circuit. The input FM wave is applied to the middle grid 11 of a five-grid valve, and the first grid 13 is connected to a fixed negative-voltage point 44 through a resistance 22. Variations of input frequency cause proportional variations of current to the inner grid, provided that the input frequency is high enough to give rise to transit time effects. The voltage variations on the inner grid 13 give a detected signal across the anode impedance 27. Bias voltages for the electrodes are supplied from a potentiometer 41 across a supply source, and from a resistance 20 in the cathode lead. A grid leak and condenser may be connected in the input lead, and brought into action by opening a switch, to give an amplitude-limiting action.
