[Class 106 (i)] An apparatus for counting articles conveyed in a stream which may be interrupted comprises a counter adapted to be driven by the conveyer, means whereby, in response to the rear of a stream passing a first given point, said counter ceases to operate, and means whereby, in response to the front of a stream passing a second given point, said counter begins to operate, this next count always beginning when the same length of the new stream has passed said second given point. A siream of overlapping newspapers is conveyed past levers 2, 21, Fig. 1. According to the presence or absence of papers, circuit-control lever 21 closes or opens a switch 3 in series with a counting switch. When the stream past clutch-control lever 2 ceases, a bar 9 is pressed downwards but is unable to move until a roller 4, engaging a cam 5 on the rotary part of the counter switch, enters a recess 6, when a bar 13 secured to the bar 9 declutches the drive from the conveyer to the counting switch, counting during the arresting motion being prevented by the open switch 3. When a new stream restores the lever 2 and bars 9, 13, the counting switch always starts rotating from the same angular position and, according to the position of the recess 6, allows a preselected number of papers to pass before counting begins. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, lever 2, 21 are spaced apart to an extent depending on the length of the newspaper.
