Abstract

556,945. Linear-dimension gauges. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., GOULDBOURN, J., and HEATHER, C. H. April 24, 1942, No. 5498. Addition to 542,657. [Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A machine as described in the parent Specification for measuring marking and splitting boot and shoe parts or other articles of sheet material in which mechanism for measuring the thickness of a workpiece is associated with fluid-operated means controlled by the measuring mechanism for adjusting the splitting or marking mechanism in accordance with the minimum thickness of the workpiece is modified so as to prevent undue wear on the pawl-and-ratchet mechanism for locking the splitting &c. mechanism in adjusted position after being set by the fluid-operated means, and the adjusting means is arranged to set the splitting mechanism to the nearest <SP>1</SP>/ 96 inch thickness of the work. The machine is formed with a fixed measuring roll 1 co-operating with a yieldably mounted roll 3 arranged as described in the parent Specification to control fluidoperated means having a piston 11 which adjusts by gear-and-pinion mechanism a setting slide 9 geared to a pair of cams 39 which control the position of a slide in which is mounted a roll 5 of the spitting mechanism which comprises a knife 8 and a yielding roller 7. The slide 9 is held in a position which sets the roll 5 a distance above the knife 8 corresponding to the minimum thickness of the workpiece by a rack 45 and a pivoted pawl 47 pressed forward by a spring-plunger 53, and another pawl 49 pressed forward by a spring 59 attached to a cam lever 57. The pawls permit movement of the slide 9 only in a direction corresponding to decreases in thickness of the workpiece. The pawls can be pressed out of engagement with the rack 45 by means of a block 61 on a rod 63 connected to a bar 65 which can slide in the machine frame and is pressed forwardly by a spring 66. The rod 65 can be moved rearwardly by engagement of a pawl 69 with a recess 67 in the rod 65, the pawl 67 being mounted on a slide 71 acted upon by a strong spring 73 capable of overcoming the action of the spring means tending to move the pawls 47. 49 into operative position. The pawl 69 is raised out of contact with recess 67 by a thrust rod 85 having a shoulder 87 engaging a pin on the pawl 69 the rod 85 being raised when a workpiece raises a shoe 93 as it is being fed. At this instant the pawls 47, 49 move towards the rack 45. They are finally moved away from the rack under control of a plate 103 which when engaged by the workniece throws in a clutch to drive a shaft 111 which causes a reciprocation of the slide 71 and first permits re-engagement of the pawl 69 with recess 67 and subseauentlv the snring 73 returns the rod 65 to the right and the block 61 trips the pawls 47. 49. This action is arranged to take place at the time that the hvdraulic rressure which causes movement of the slide 9 is reversed so that there is no pressure on the pawls as they are withdrawn. The reversal of the pressure is controlled by a lever 115 operated when the gate 113 drops off the trailing edge of the workpiece. The teeth of the rack 45 are set anart at a distance of <SP>1</SP>/ 96 of an inch and the action of the pawls 47, 49 is such that slide 9 is finally set to the nearest unit of this value. As the pawls come into engagement the pawl 47 in each case engages a tooth before the pawl 49 which is mounted on the swinging arm 57 and is set so as to engage a tooth of the rack at a position which is equal to half the length of a tooth distant from the position which is engaged by the pawl 49. If as shown in Fig. 6 the pawl 47 engages a tooth 153 not more than half way above the top of a tooth 151 the action of the pawl 49 is to press the top of tooth 151 into contact with the pawl 47. If however the tooth 47 engages the tooth 151 above half way the pawl 49 causes movement of the rack permitting the tooth 153 to engage the pawl 47. The slide 9 is fitted with a stamping mechanism similar to that described in Specification 219,394, [Class 100 (ii)], comprising a stamp wheel 147 carrying a series of stamps adapted to stamp the thickness of the workpiece, and also a manually adjustable size wheel 149. The wheel 147 is adapted to be parallel to the workpiece while making the impression. Specification 244,529, [Class 106 (ii)], also is referred to.
