EMIL ,eNoEfrmbr cINcINNATLoIIId AssIGNOR To THE INTERNATIONAL HARNESS v1vIAC:eII1\IERY COMPANY, OE CINCINNATI,` OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
LOOP-FORMING PRESS.
To. all whom zt-may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL GNoE'rI-I, a citizen of thejUnited States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement. in Loop-Forming Presses, of which the 'following'speciflcation is a full disclosure.
My invention 'relates tojan improvement in forming-presses 'offthe hand `operated type, :and is-InOre particularly idirected to aforming press adapted for `use in forming and:compressinglharness strap loops.
-Theoobject Iof the invention is to provide a press of this type with automatic compensating operating-mechanism having a compound jpowe'r strokeandoperat'edby a single lever.
AAnother object is to, provideA a yielding mandrelfor *centering the work vin relation to the compression members.
-Other objects and featuresaregmore full)7 set Vforth 'the ldescription of the accom-- panying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure `1 -is a yfront elevatiompartly in section, the-mechanism being in normal posit-ion.
F'iga2 is a topyplanview, partly in section.
lFig. 3 is a vertical section of 4Figjl.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation with the parts in operated position and the Vwork in position.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a harness stra-p with completed .strap loop.
When the strap and loop, as shown in finished form in Fig. 5, are assembled and stitched, the loop assumes a rounded form, as shown in dotted lines, and as in the finished product it is desired to produce a loop of approximate flat rectangular form, a compressing or molding of the loop is required. This operation is also utilized to form finish stripes, headings or othe1` decorative borders or markings, as may be deon line 3. 3,
' sired.
The press comprises a frame 1, having its upper part cored out to form front and rear walls 2, 3, and its medial portion horizontally slotted to provide a slide-wav for a pair of reciprocatory side die blocks f1, 4. Said die-blocks are provided with detachable side dies 5, 5, and are guided through- Specification of Letters Patent.

the front "and rear walls 2,' 3. Adjacent either side of the plungerll and slidably mounted in Ways formedin lthe walls 2, 8, therev is provided a pair ofl side die operati` ing slides l2, 12,l each slide being apertured near-its vlower vend 'toreceive one end of a bell crank lever 13, the opposite end of which pivotally connects with its companion sideV die block 4, The bell crank levers'13, 13, ,-arepivoted between the walls 2, 3, on studs 14, 14.- A pair of spring receiving apertures 15', 15, are cut, half in each of theV abutting surfaces of the plunger 1i` and the side die operating slides 12, 12, forming opposing abutments for the springs 16, 16. These springs are relatively weaker than the springs 8, 8, but are of sufiicient power to/return'the plunger 11 to normal position.
An operating hand -lever l17 is eccentricall)71 journaled on a shaft 18 lmounted in the upper ends of the operating slides ,12, '12,'
the eccentric cam portion 19 of said handle being adapted to engage the plunger 11. 20 represents a floating work supporting mandrel which is detachably secured to a yielding spring arm 21. The forward end of the mandrel is rounded to facilitate the threading of the work thereon. The arm 21 is fixed to the frame 1 and extends upwardh7 to forni a stop 22 for the operating lever 17.
In the operation of the press, the work is threaded on the mandrel 20 positioning the strap loop 25 intermediate the dies. The hand lever 17 is then pulled forward, its eccentric cam portion 19 engaging and forcing downward the plunger 11 until the top die engages the strap loop 25 on the mandrel 20 and forces the strap against the anvil die 9. This forms an abutment limiting the downward movement of the plunger 11, except for a final compressing operation, as will be later explained. During the plunger movement, just described, the springs 8, 8, being of greater strength than the springs 16, 16, hold the side die blocks 4, 4, in normal position against the frame 1 and by the intervening bell crank levers 13, 13, likewise hold the slides 12, 12, against movement during the compressing of the springs 16, 16. ln this instance the lever 17 pivots on the slides 12, 12, and the plunger is the driven member. l/Vhen the plunger reaches the end of its stroke and the hand lever 17 is further operated, the cam portion 19 thereof, using the plunger 11 as a pivot abutment, exerts an upward pull on the shaft 18 and slides l2, 12. rlhis upward movement of the slides 12, 12, will rock the bell crank levers 13, 13, and force the side die blocks 4, 4, in- Wardl)Y bringing their dies 5, 5, into engagement with the strap loop 25. in this inw stance, the plunger 11 is the pivot of the lever and the slides 12, 12, the driven members.
With all the dies engaging the loop, a final pressure is applied to the hand lever 17 to compress the loop and impress the finish stripes or headings into the leather surface.
By this arrangement, I have provided a compression press having a compound power stroke which automatically compensates for variations in thickness and qualitv of the leather stock operated upon.
Having described the invention, l claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a Jframe, translatory side die members, a plunger, a top die carried thereby, reciprocatorv side die operating members. and an operating lever pivotall'v mounted on the operating members and engaging the plunger.
2. A device ot the class described comprising a frame. translator)v side die members` a plunger, a top die carried thereby, reeiprocator)T side die operating members. spring means intermediate the plunger and operating members. for normalizing the plunger, spring means for retaining the side die members in normal position until the plunger has completed its power stroke, and an operating lever pivoted on the operating members and engaging the plunger.
3. A device of the class described comprising a. frame, an anvil plate, translatory side dies, a plunger, a top die carried thereby, a floating Work supporting mandrel positioned intermediate the dies and anvil plate, reciprocatory side die operating members, and an operating lever pivoted on said members and engaging the plunger,
4. A device of the class described comprising a frame. translatorr side dies, a plunger, a top die carried thereby, recipro` catorv side die operating members, an operating lever piroted on the operating members and engaging the plunger adapted to first' reciprocate said plunger in one direction and subsequently reciprocate the side die operating members in a reverse direction, spring means for normalizing the plunger., and a second spring means for normalizing the side dies.
5. In a device of the class described, a iframe, side dies and an intermediate top die, a plunger and lever first operating the top die. and means operated by the lever for actuating the side dies While the top die is iu position of pressure.
G. in a device of the class described, a iframe. an anvil block and ioating mandrel, side and top dies adapted to close in relation to the anvil and mandrel, and a die operating mechanism having a common 0perating member, for sequentially operating the top and then the two side die members.
lu Witness whereof, l hereunto subscribe mi' name, as attested b v the tvvo subscribing Witnesses.
