Abstract

556,745. Electric signalling systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., FONSECA, H. M. M. D'ASSIS-, and WARD, H. J. April 14, 1942, No. 4889. [Class 40 (i)] A receiver for a train of impulses which vary individually in polarity and length comprises a pair of relays responsive respectively to positive and negative impulses, a common relay operated by either of these relays and a pendulum relay which is controlled by the common relay and serves to indicate a long impulse when swinging freely on occurrence of such an impulse. A transmitter of such an impulse train is described in. Specification 556,739 and the invention is applicable to control and supervisory systems for power networks such as are described in Specifications 489,000 and 514,991 with reference to impulse trains of a different character. The impulse train comprises a long seize and a short prepare impulse followed by the code impulses (long or short +<SP>ve</SP> or -<SP>ve</SP>) and a long terminating impulse. The polarity of the impulses other than those of the code is immaterial. The seize impulse operating IP or IN bings up IR followed by G and, when IR relapses, by C. Both C and G hold during the train. The back stroke magnet SRM of switch SR energizes on the prepare impulse, and pendulum relay PI previously operated by G is de-energized when IR operates on the prepare and subsequent impulses. The period of the pendulum armature synchronizes with the short impulses, and the release of relay PM occurs on the operation of P1 during such impulses, but on a long impulse PM is held and the pendulum armature pi1 makes a circuit over SR4, pm1, ir2, g1 towards the end of the impulse, to give an indication over switch bank LPM. The positive and negative impulses are indicated over banks PPM, NPM in obvious manner. C falls back during the terminating impulse. The drawing shows discrimination between the lengths of make impulses, but by reversing contact ir2, break impulses could be distinguished.
