Abstract

556,569. Dynamometers. HIGHFIELD, F. W. W. Aug. 8, 1942, No. 11127. [Class 106 (ii)] An electric-current generator adapted to be driven by the prime-mover to be tested is connected to a resistor whose current/voltage characteristic corresponds approximately to the power/speed characteristic of the prime-mover, or of an air-propeller or other means driven by it and in which the heat generated in the resistor is absorbed by water, air or other fluid. A convenient known material for the resistor consists of silicon carbide and carbon which is used in the form of rods. The resistor may be mounted in a steam boiler to generate steam or it may heat air for workshops, offices &c. Gas-discharge tubes may form the resistor instead of the above rods.
