Abstract

555,972. Rotary engines; hydraulic transmission of power. HAYES ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and MITCHELL, R. J. Dec. 8, 1941, No. 15842. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A hydraulic variable speed gear especially appliable for driving metal drilling and like machines comprises a gear pump element having a central gear 6A on a driving-shaft 22 and cooperating pump elements 5A, 7A supplied from a reservoir 23 by pipes 24, 25 respectively. The pressure fluid produced may pass to outlet pipes 27, 28 when the device acts as two gear pumps delivering in parallel, or by closing a valve 15A the outlet passes only to the pipe 27. The pressure fluid can be passed to either of two motor gear units similar to the pump unit 6A, 5A, 7A and valves 30, 31 control the flow of fluid in such a way that either of the motor units may act as the driven unit and each unit may receive two pressure streams or so as to cause all three gears of a unit to be in operation, or each unit may receive only one stream so that only one pair of gears act to effect the drive. The two driven shafts 29, 35 are connected by an Oldham coupling 34, and universal joints 37 connect to a bevel wheel 40 geared to the ultimate output shaft 38. The gear pump 6A, 5A, 7A may be replaced by a pump of another kind but in this case the motor is constructed and controlled in the same manner as the gear pump described.
