[Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Groups XX and XXIV] Mechanism for converting motion according to one law into motion according to another law, for use, for example, in converting translational movement of a deviating prism in a range finder or height finder, following a reciprocal law, into readings on a uniform scale of range or function thereof, comprises a first element B moving in a rectilinear path A between lower and upper range limits 0, 2. a lever E slidably and pivotally engaging the element B and movable about a fixed pivot C located on a line OC perpendicular to the path A at the lower limit position, and a second element F slidable and pivotally engaged with the lever E and arranged to move in a rectilinear path K, 2, intersecting the path A above the lower limit position and intersecting the perpendicular at a point intermediate between O and C, the arrangement being such that movement of the element F in the path K, 2 causes angular movement of the lever E, and consequential movement of the element B In a rangefinder, the prism moves with the element B, and the element F is operated from the working head. The path A may be formed by a guide and to permit the element B to move to an infinity position the lever E may be cranked. Readings of heights may be obtained by mounting the guide A and pivot C on a frame X, and the screw on a carriage Y movable parallel to the guide A by pinions 5 and racks 6 through a distance proportionate to the size of the angle of elevation of the plane of sight.
