Abstract
551,510. Range-finders. CHING, T. A. Sept 22, 1941, No. 12243. [Class 97 (i)] In range-finders comprising angularly adjustable elements at the ends of a base, and in which the range triangle is reproduced in miniature within the instrument, the angle between the elements is adjusted by movement of a slide along two slideways respectively operatively secured to the elements ; a point moving with the slide represents the object ranged on, and the centre lines of the slideways, or lines parallel thereto, represents the lines of sight, so that the position of the slide indicates range and the rate of movement of the slide indicates rate of change of range. As shown, the object is observed through a pivoted telescope 2, both directly, and also indirectly by means of a pivoted mirror 4 covering half the field, and a fixed mirror 1 at the other end of the base. Arms 7, 8, and a spring, cause the angular movement of the mirror 4 to be halt that of the telescope. A slideway 3 is fixed on the base, and a slideway '6 moves with the telescope, movement of the slideway and telescope being effected by operation of a slide 10 by rack, chain, or screw, &c. The slideway 3 may comprise two rods, and the slide 10 three parts pivoted together, preferably provided with rollers or other means for reducing friction and providing accurate location.
