Abstract
555,316. Induction machines. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., NIXON, J. H. R., and MORRISON, A. C. Feb. 7, 1942, No. 1638. [Class 35] The slip-rings 11, 12, 13 of induction motors are short circuited by engaging contacts 17 thereon with contacts 20 carried by a sleeve 19 keyed to the motor shaft 10 and held in two positions by a spring-pressed ball 201 engaging either of the recesses 21, 22 in the key 18. The sleeve is actuated by a cam or worm 23 carried by a spindle 24 and operated by a handle 261. The cam engages a groove 26 in a thrust member 27 held against rotation by pins 29 on the casing of the motor. Preferably a ball bearing 271 is interposed between the member 27 and the sleeve 19. A roller 31 on the cam engages a lever carrying a bar 33 which lies under the tail ends of the brushes and lifts them clear of the rings when the cam is moved to short circuiting position. The movement of the cam also operates a plunger 35 to operate a switch 36 in a warming or interlock circuit. Wear between the cam and groove may be taken up by adjusting the shaft 24 laterally by means of an eccentric, or by adjusting the position of the member 27 to present different parts of the groove to the cam. The device may be operated automatically as by a governor, time lag device and relay, or by remote control.
