Abstract
555,163. Obtaining cellulosic fibres. WESTMAN, K. E., and STRAUSZ, H. J. April 9, 1942, No. 4686. [Class 2 (ii)] Fibres are obtained from the leaves of hardleaved plants such as Colombian pita, by treatment with alkali in the presence of an oil and a petroleum sulphonate. The alkali is of sufficient concentration to soften the tough skin and binding substances of the leaves but it is prevented from attacking the fibres owing to the presence of the oil and petroleum sulphonate. The freshly cut or dried leaves may be treated in an autoclave at elevated temperature and pressure with a solution of sodium carbonate of 5-10 per cent. strength containing an addition of a mixture of nearly neutral petroleum sulphonates, paraffin oil or kerosene, water, and ethyl alcohol. This addition has a softening effect on the fibres in addition to its protective effect. The treated leaf material is washed and may then be passed between roughened or corrugated rollers which press out most of the moisture. The leaf material is then passed through scraping and combing machines which separate out and comb or card the fibres and prepare them for spinning.
