Abstract
Natural fibres in loose state but free from hard bark, husk, or skin, or textiles made of such fibres are subjected to the action of caustic alkali of a concentration between 2 and 6 DEG Tw., without application of heat or pressure, in order to reduce the natural hardness of the fibres, render the materials more flexible and soft, render non-cellulosic constituents soluble, and give the materials greater affinity for dyestuffs. The fibres may be of vegetable or animal origin, but treatments of fibres of duda (Hibiscus Cannabinus) and of sisal or similar hard fibres of the Agave family are excluded. When the treatment is carried out in hot climates, the treatment bath may be cooled by means of a cooling coil. The treatment results in the extraction of waxes, gums, resinous bodies, and pectic substances from vegetable fibres such as cotton, flax, hemp and jute, and of resins, keratin, wool fat, and vegetable matter from animal fibres. After the alkali treatment the materials may be pressed, washed, and pressed. In the case of flax and jute fibres, the pressure treatment begins the longitudinal splitting of the fibres into finer fibres. The splitting process may be continued after the material has been dried, by passing it through a crimping machine. Examples describe the treatment of jute roots, decorticated flax straw, and unbleached cotton cloth. Specifications 147,080, [Class 120 (i)], 383,627, [Group IX], and 458,310 are referred to.
