[Class 69 (iii)] [Also in Group XXI] A liquid or foam discharge appliance, primarily for fire fighting but applicable also for horticultural purposes or for spraying buildings, comprises telescopically extensible open-ended tubes 10, 11, 12 having a substantially liquid-tight sliding fit, and made oval or provided with guide keys to prevent them from axial turning, the lower tube 10 being secured by clips 13 on a pivoted cradle 14 which can be raised and lowered by a screwed strut 18 pivoted at 19 to a road vehicle 17. To the upper end of the discharge tube 12 is fixed a two-part valve casing 21, 22 housing a butterfly valve 24, the spindle 23 of which is connected to a spring-controlled curved operating lever 29 pivoted at 35 between two spaced bars incorporated in a link 34, which has a limited sliding movement through a plate 36 fixed to the valve casing 22. A cable 33 connected to this link has its lower end wound on a drum 38 carried by a bracket 43 fixed to the lower tube 10. The drum casing includes a controlling spring and also carries a brake mechanism operated by a self-locking lever 56. In operation, water under pressure is admitted into the lower tube with the valve 24 closed, and the tubes are expanded until arrested by application of the brake, which stops the pay-out of the cable and, through the lever 29, opens the valve, when the water is discharged through a nozzle on the end of the upper tube 12. When the water supply is cut off, the tubes undergo a partial collapse provided for by the lost motion connection 36, 37, so that the cable becomes slack and the valve 24 closes. Water locked in tubes can be drained off by a cock 78.
