[Class 78 (ii)] [Also in Group XIX] In a depth or position indicator for mine cages &c. of the kind comprising a low-speed indicating member, a scale, and a high-speed indicating member, the high-speed member moves over a similar path to that of the lowspeed member and is in the form of a surface of considerable extent in the direction of travel and bears one or more indicating marks. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the low-speed member is a pointer 1 moving over a fixed scale 2a and driven from a shaft 8 through bevel gearing 4, 5 and worm gearing 6, 7, the pointer moving through 180 degrees and 360 degrees for the full travel of the mine cage. The highspeed pointer comprises a disc 11 having one or more position marks 11a and driven from the shaft 8 through bevel gearing 9, 10. The ratio of the speeds of the disc 11 and pointer 1 may be 40:1, and the mark 11a may have the same linear speed as the cage. When the mark 11a and the pointer 1 coincide at a particular point on the fixed scale 2a it is known with a high degree of accuracy that the cage is in a definite position. For indicating the position of a second and connected cage a second pointer 1a may be provided opposite the first, each pointer rotating only through 180 degrees. The angle between the two pointers may be adjustable in order to allow for the stretch of the ropes. Modifications are described in which (1) the scale 2a rotates and the pointer 1 is fixed, (2) the scale 2a and the disc 11 are tangential circles, and (3) the low-speed scale and the high-speed members are co-axial side-by-side cylindrical surfaces, the fixed member or pointer being a wire stretched across the faces of the cylinders. In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the lowspeed member is a pointer 21 moved over a stationary scale 22 by screw-and-nut gear 23, 24, and the high-speed member is an endless band 31 carrying one or more marks 31a and driven from the cage through gearing 28, 30. Two such arrangements moving in opposite directions may be used for a pair of connected mine cages.
