Abstract

554,249. Bolts, studs &c. HOWLETT, J. H. Jan. 7, 1942, No. 255. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Metal bolts, screws, set-pins or studs having a shank with a head or intermediate portion of greater cross-sectional area are made of shanks screwed to separate heads or intermediate portions, a metal or alloy being then fused at the screw connection to effect a permanent joint. A bolt may be made by screwing one of the threaded ends of a shank into a tapped hole in a head cut from a hexagonal rod, applying a copper or like brazing wire round the shank adjacent to the head &c. and heating in a furnace so that the copper melts and flows between the interengaging surfaces, one or both of which may be provided in their contacting faces with circular grooves. In making a stud for carrying twin wheels of a road vehicle a collar with a tapped hole is screwed on a shank screw-threaded from end to end and is fixed in the desired intermediate position by brazing as in the previous example.
