Abstract
553,808. Mats for stair treads. BROWN, H. C. B. Jan. 29, 1942, No. 1261. [Class 142 (iv)] A mat for a stair tread comprises a board-like support 4 upon which is located a tube-shaped piece or sleeve 5 of carpeting. The carpeting may be woven or felted fabric material, or may be formed of rubber or synthetic rubber. The position of the surface of the carpet can thus be changed so that the wear can be evenly distributed. The support 4 may be made of wood, metal or compressed fibrous material, and may be extended beyond the two edges of the sleeve so that it can be secured, e.g. by screws 7, to the stair tread. Alternatively a pair of retaining members 10, 11 may be provided, each member having a recess 12 to receive the extensions of the board. The extensions of the board may be held in place by sliding locking strips 16. In another form, one of the retaining members may be slidable so that slots therein engage screws projecting from the other retaining member so as to lock the two members together. In yet another form, the retaining member is of channel form and the board is held against movement by plugs fitting into holes in the channelshaped member.
