Abstract

553,705. Catalytic processes; hydrocarbons. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. Sept. 12, 1941, Nos. 11721 and 11722. Convention dates, Sept. 9, 1940, and May 3, 1941. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] In the vapour phase conversion of carbonaceous materials in the presence of a ferrous metal and a catalyst susceptible to contamination by iron, which catalyst is periodically regenerated by oxidation, there is maintained in the feed to the conversion zone from 0.0006 to 0.015 per cent. of sulphur in the form of elemental sulphur or a reducible sulphur compound, thereby inhibiting the contamination of the catalyst by iron. Reducible selenium and tellurium compounds may be similarly used. Preferred compounds are carbonyl sulphide, sulphur trioxide, thiophenic compounds, mercaptans, dialkyl sulphides and organic polysulphides. The process is applicable to the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons, particularly of propane and butane, at temperatures above 500‹F. using supported chromium oxide catalyst in a chrome steel converter.
