Abstract
553,626. Pipe-end closing. BRITISH BUNDY TUBING CO., Ltd. (Bundy Tubing Co.). April 25, 1942, No. 5562. [Class 83 (iv)] A pipe 1 is closed by inserting a metal disc 6, Fig. 2, and then applying external pressure to the pipe-end surrounding the disc to cause it to thicken and flow over the edge of the disc. This may be inserted by a mandrel 8 with a magnetic tip 9 and the pressure may be applied by a die 3 which causes the disc to become concave externally. The parts are preferably cold but may be hot and, if desired, be sealed by solder or brazing material. The method may be used for sealing pipes used in refrigerators, to keep them clean internally during coiling &c., and in bombs or shells.
