Abstract

553,576. Escalators. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Dec. 5, 1941, No. 15698. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1940. [Class 78 (i)] The handrail 9 of an escalator is driven in accordance with the movement of the treads (not shown) by means of a wheel 12 having a rim 26 round which the handrail passes, this wheel carrying a plurality of pivoted fingers 22, 23 the free ends of which are caused to grip the handrail to increase the driving grip of the wheel on the handrail. and are withdrawn from engagement with the handrail as it leaves the driving wheel. In the construction shown the wheel 12 is mounted on a shaft 20 and is fixed to a sprocket 18 driven by a chain from the shaft driving the chain for the stair treads. The fingers 22, 23 are pivoted at 30, 24 to lugs on the wheel 12 and are so connected by links 36 that their outer ends move inwards and outwards together. A spring 32 presses the ends of the fingers apart to grip the handrail as shown in Fig. 3. Arms 40 on the fingers 22 carry rollers 43 adapted to engage a fixed cam 44 and move the ends of the fingers together so that they can freely enter and leave the opening in the inner side of the handrail. As shown the cam extends over 180 degrees so that the fingers are only expanded over that part of the wheel 12 which is covered by the handrail.
