Abstract

553,079. Clamps. LEADER, S. A. Dec. 17, 1941, No. 16306. [Class 44] [Also in Groups V, XIII and XVIII] A device for clamping together two parts of a mould, e.g. of a dental flask, comprises a bimetallic member composed of two metals having different coefficients of expansion rigidly joined together, the device being so arranged that as the temperature increases the member becomes distorted and exerts, directly or indirectly, an increasing pressure, tending to force together the two parts of the mould. The parts of the mould itself may serve as parts of the clamping device. In Figs. 1 and 2 the clamping device comprises two horizontal members 1, 2 joined by two bimetallic members 3, 4 each comprising two strips riveted together. A thumb screw 5 (or a vertically movable platform) holds together the two parts of a dental flask 6. The strip having the higher coefficient of expansion is on the outside, so that when the dental flask is heated the members 3, 4 bend as in Fig. 2. The pressure may be exerted on the flask indirectly through a rod &c. disposed between the flask and one of the members 1, 2. In modifications :- (a) one or more bimetallic wedges or pins are driven between the top of a flask and a wall of a rectangular frame in which the flask stands. The wedges &c. may be fixed to the frame. The two parts of the wedge or pin may be joined together at one or more places or over the whole of the contacting parts. (b) In a frame somewhat similar to that shown, the part 2 is the bimetallic member. (c) The bimetallic member is carried on the lower end of the screw 5. (d) Figs. 9 and 10. Two bimetallic pins 15 are inserted in the holes 18, provided for the reception of ordinary pins, in a standard dental flask.
