Abstract

553,061. Coated paper. KODAK. Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). Sept. 4, 1941, No. 11328. [Class 96] Paper, particularly for receiving a sensitive photographic emulsion, which has been waterproofed, as by coating on both sides with a composition of cellulose butyrate or acetobutyrate as disclosed in Specifications 540,765 or 542,959, or with natural or artificial resin &c., is further coated with a baryta composition containing an organic liquid miscible with the water &c. of the baryta suspension and present to an extent which will soften the waterproofing substance so as to ensure good adherence of the baryta coating thereto. The waterproofing composition may be thin and free from pin-holes so as to retain flexibility and protect the paper from dimensional changes, e.g. during developing. The baryta coating, which includes a binder such as gelatine, a water-soluble, far-hydrolized cellulose ester, or a synthetic resin, e.g. hydrolized polyvinyl ester or acetal, or a polyvinyl alcohol, prevents penetration of the photographic emulsion into the paper and protects the emulsion from impurities in the paper. As organic softening liquid may be used carbitol acetate, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, acetone, dioxane, methyl ethyl ketone, or methyl acetate.
