Abstract

552,811. Organic aluminium salts. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.). Sept. 19, 1941. No. 12041. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group VI and IV] An edible self-condensation product of hydroxyacetic acid having a melting point between 120‹ and 200‹C., some or all of the carboxyl groups of which have had their hydrogen replaced by a metal which forms an edible salt therewith, e.g. aluminium, is used in baking powders. The acid may be condensed by heating at 170‹ to 210‹C. at a pressure between 760 mm. and 10 mm. for one to five hours. In an example, the acid is heated at 175‹C. for one hour in a flask connected to a condenser while nitrogen is bubbled slowly therethrough, the pressure is then reduced to 100 mm. for 10 minutes and finally, to 75mm. for twenty minutes at a temperature between 175‹ and 180‹C., the products having melting points ranging from 168‹ to 173‹C. The condensed acid is neutralized or partially neutralized by reaction with carbonate, oxide, hydroxide or a soluble salt, e.g. acetate or hydroxyacetate, of the metal at a temperature between 170‹ and 210‹C. for half an hour to two hours, the product being cooled and ground.
