Abstract

552,444. Synthetic resin adhesives &c. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and DOROUGH, G. L. Sept. 1, 1941, No. 11133. [Class 2 (iii)] A resinous coating adhesive or moulding composition comprises a hydroxylated polyvinyl resin in which from 10 to 50 per cent. of the carbon atoms of the polyvinyl chain are directly attached to hydroxyl groups, in admixture or combined with a polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate. Preferably the latter comprises between 0.1 and 10 per cent. on the weight of resin. The hydroxylated poly-vinyl resins are partially or completely hydrolyzed polyvinyl esters 'or ester interpolymers or partial polyvinyl acetals or ketals. The process includes coating products of the polyvinyl resins with a polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate, which may be used in solution, and also includes coating articles with films of the polyvinyl resin and polyisocyanate in either order. Laminated products may be united by the composition or the process of lamination may comprise coating the material first with the polyvinyl resin followed by the polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate. Specified polyisocyanates or polyisothiocyanates include hexamethylene, ethylene and tetramethylene diisocyanates and diisothiocyanates, 1 : 4-cyclohexanediol, 2 : 3-dimethyltetramethylene, 2 - chlorotrimethylene and 5-nitro-1:3 phenylene diisocyanates, p-phenylene and p : p<SP>1</SP>-diphenylene diisothiocyanates, p-isocyanatobenzyl and m-isocyanato-cinnamyl isocyanates, bis-2- isocyanatoethyl ether and its corresponding sulphide, 1 : 5 - diisocyanate - 3 - pentanone, 1 : 2 : 4-benzene triisothiocyanate and butane- 1 : 2 : 2-triisocyanate. The composition may also include pigments, cellulose derivatives, nylon, natural resins, e.g. rosin, copal, kauri, congo, manilla, damar and shellac, plasticizers, e.g. lower melting triglyceride oils, alkyd resins, phthalate esters, phenols, mineral oils and polyhydric alcohols, driers, fillers, waxes, inhibitors, catalysts, solvents and synthetic resins, e.g. unmodified or oil modified alkyd resins, polyacrylates and polymethacrylates, polystyrene, polyvinyl esters i.e. the acetate and chloride, urea-, amide-, phenol-, aldehyde-, ketone-, and amino-formaldehyde resins, ester gum, hydrogenated phenolformaldehyde resins, hydrogenated, limed or leaded rosin. In examples (1) to a solution of partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate in dioxane is added hexamethylene diisocyanate; the product is a coating composition or it can be pulverized to give a moulding powder ; (2) lamination is carried out by coating maple wood strips with partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate followed by hexamethylene diisocyanate in dry toluene and then pressing ; materials to which this is applicable include also leather, cloth and nylon coated fabrics (nylon is defined in Specification 552,190) ; (3) a thin film of polyvinyl alcohol is coated with a solution of hexamethylene diisocyanate in dry dioxane and baked ; and (4) films are flowed from compositions comprising hexamethylene diisocyanate and the partial formal of polyvinyl alcohol using dioxane as solvent and the partial butyral or partial ethyl methyl ketal using dimethyl formamide as solvent.
