Abstract
1513525 Polyurethane coatings from tall oil pitch M DOLK V ERA and J J LINDBERG 29 March 1976 12464/76 Heading C3R A method for the manufacture of polyurethane films and coatings from tall oil pitch comprises esterifying a tall oil pitch, having an acid number of 30-60 and a hydroxyl number of 60-90 with from 5-15 wt. per cent based on the weight of tall oil pitch, of an aliphatic alcohol having at least three hydroxy groups to give an esterified tall oil pitch having an acid number of 5-35 and a hydroxyl number of 200-350; adding to the esterified tall oil pitch an aliphatic triisocyanate in an ambient sufficient to give 10-35 parts by weight of isocyanate groups per 100 parts by weight of esterified tall oil pitch; spreading the mixture on a base material and curing the coating or film at room temperature or above. Suitable aliphatic alcohols are glycerol or pentaerythritol. The esterification may be carried out by heating under reduced pressure in the presence of 0À1-0À5 wt. per cent p-toluene-sulphonic acid based on the weight of tall oil pitch. The aliphatic triisocyanate may be added as a solution in an inert organic solvent, e.g. a 1 : 1 mixture of ethylene glycolacetate and xylene. Diluents, e.g. ethyl acetate, softeners, e.g. dioctyl phthalate and dyes may be added to the triisocyanate/esterified tall oil pitch mixture before curing which may take from 1-3 days at room temperature or 1-10 hours at 100‹ C.
