Abstract
552,026. Stud fastenings. HOPGOOD, T. Sept. 17, 1941, No. 11945. [Class 44] A fastening device, described as particularly suitable for securing an aeroplane panel 10 to a support shown as a second panel 11, comprises a stud 2 rotatably mounted on panel 10 and provided with projections 7 which are passed through an aperture in the support into engagement with the coils 14 of a preferably conical spring secured to the support. The stud is rotated by screw-driver &c. applied to a slot in the head 3 of the stud, causing the projections to travel along and compress the spring. Preferably the spring has several coils with a corresponding number of projections on the stud to provide a multi-start screw action. As shown the spring has two coils 14 connected at their free ends by a preferably integral bridge-piece 15. The coils are. bent to provide depressions 19 into which projections 7 snap to prevent accidental release of the stud and to provide parallel portions, merging into the bridge-piece, which act as abutments limiting rotation of the stud. The other ends 16 of the coils are bent outwards and formed with terminal eyes to receive securing devices such as rivets or screws 18 which also secure the base-flange 21 of a preferably frustro-conical guide socket 22 surrounding the support aperture. The socket may have an outwardly curled lip 20 and has slots through which ends 16 pass. A rubber or other resilient washer may be introduced between the parts 10, 11 and surrounding the stud, particularly if panel 10 is of curved form, the washer preferably being cemented to the panel. To facilitate assembly of the stud on the panel its cylindrical shank is hollow, with circular apertures 5, Fig. 5, and initially has convex humps 8 in the region of the apertures. A cylindrical pin 6, the ends of which provide the projections 7, has its ends reduced by flats 9, and is passed through the apertures 5 after the stud shank has been passed through the aperture in the panel. The humps 8 are then flattened to force the aperture walls into contact with the flats and retain the pin against removal.
