Abstract
552,012. Varnishes; polymerized rosin. HERCULES POWDER CO. July 9, 1941, No. 8666. Convention date, Feb. 14. [Class 95] [Also in Group IV] A spirit varnish of high viscosity and of good drying characteristics, is prepared by dissolving a polymerized rosin, having a drop melting point of from 90‹ C. to 176‹ C., in a volatile organic solvent. Many solvents are specified. One or more other spirit-soluble resins, such as damar, manila, accroides, elemi, sandarac, shellac or mastic, may be incorporated. Plasticizers and pigments may be added. The polymerized rosin used may be prepared from wood or gum rosin, or from a rosin acid, by treatment with sulphuric acid, boron trifluoride, stannic chloride, zinc chloride, aluminium chloride or hydrofluoric acid, or by treatment with a high voltage high frequency discharge, and may then be refined and bleached. U.S.A. Specification 2,271,724 is referred to.
