Abstract
551,662. Shoe machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Aug. 2, 1941, No. 9874. [Classes 89 (iii) and 112)] The last-carrier on an automatically operated shoe machine such, for example, as that described in Specification 289,142, [Class 89 (iii)], can be turned through complete rotation. To this end, the link 46, imparting feeding movements to the jack, is connected between the jack-frame 12 and the lastcarrier 60 by a universal joint 65 and the link is curved so as to lie out of the path of the last-carrier. The last-carrier is furnished with a last-pin 98, a toe-support 74 and a pair of toe-grips 80. The grips 80 are mounted to turn on vertical axes in blocks pivoted on horizontal axes 84. They are urged to converge towards the toe by springs 86. They are pressed towards one another, about the pivots 84 by plungers having rack-tooth engagement with one long pinion 92 which also engages a rack 130 on a slide 116. The slide 116 has ratchet teeth which, when a shoe is being located, are engaged by a pawl 118. The last-pin 98 is pivoted at 100 upon a slide 96, is pressed away from the toe-support by a spring 115 and is moved towards it by means of a pawl 106 pivoted on a lever 102 coupled by a link 136 to a jacking-lever 122. When a lasted shoe is placed on the pin 98, it is pressed forward manually, with the slide 96, to bring the toe against the stop 78, the jacking-lever 122 is then turned clockwise. This brings the dent 118 into operation and, by the pawl 106, turns the last-pin to press the shoe towards the toe-stop 78. At the same time, due to the eccentric mounting of the pawl 118 in the jacking-lever, the pawl forces the slide 116 towards the last-pin and thereby increases the pressure exercised by the toe-grips 80. The link 136 and the jacking-lever form a holding toggle at the completion of the movement. A detent pawl co-operates with the pawl 106 so that further movement of the last-pin can be obtained by a second operation of the jacking-lever. The toe-support 70 is pivoted at 72 and is raised in accordance with the length of the shoe by a rod 144 which passes under the toe-support.
