Abstract
551,326. Roughing shoe-soles. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Aug. 14, 1941, No. 10330. [Class 31 (i)] A machine for roughing the margin of a shoe sole has a power driven roughing tool in the form of a helically wound saw blade carried by a shaft mounted for yielding movement relatively to the work support. Sole-feeding mechanism adjusts itself to the thickness of the work and maintains its periphery in contact with a pair of edge gauges spaced a short distance apart. A helical saw blade 25 is screwed into a groove in a sleeve and clamped at its ends, the sleeve being keyed to a shaft 18 driven at high speed by a belt pulley and mounted in a long bearing member 16 pivoted at 14 and urged downwardly toward the work by a spring 26. The member !16 is raised for the insertion of work by a treadle connected to a rod 62 actuating bell-crank levers 48, 60. The gauge members comprise a roughened circular stud 78 driven by gearing 82, 84 and an adjustable stud 114. The stud 78 projects from a rotating disc 64 adjacent to a rotatable disc 92 on a stem urged upwardly by a spring 104 to a limit determined by a collar 102. Below these supports is a table 210 carrying an adjustable work support 212 with inclined ends. A work-feeding disc 130 is driven by gearing 150 and is adjustable about a vertical bar 140 for variation of the direction of the part of the disc 130 in contact with the work The work-feeding disc is carried by a lever 160 pivoted at 164 and is swung upwardly about its pivot when a new work-piece is to be inserted by connections from the treadle rod 62. It is pressed down on the work by a spring 176 adjustable by a head '182. The disc 130 is inclined to the work, and a presser foot urged downwardly by a spring and pivoted to an arm 196 extends beneath the disc.
