Abstract
422,692. Cutting-machines. COMPO SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 565, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 15, 1934, No. 23584. Convention date, May 29. [Class 31 (i)] A machine for cutting complementary insoles and outsoles from a single rounded blank, Fig. 9, comprises feeding and guiding means for the blank, and a cutting device 18, Fig. 10, which starting from a preformed slash A, continues a split B and also extends the cut to the surface of the blank so as to leave the part D integral with the outside. The knife has cutting edges 21, 22 at right angles to one another. Feeding and guiding means are shown generally in Fig. 1. An operator takes the sole blank previously slashed and split and by means of a treadle connected to a rod 56 elevates the feed apparatus pivoted at 44 so as to insert the work beneath a feed wheel 57. The knife 18 is inserted in the split B at the slash A while the blank is positioned against an edge gauge 69. The treadle is released and a spring 51 clamps the feed wheel 57 against the blank. The operator pulls a handle 36 in a clockwise direction, Fig. 6, causing a lever 34 to pivot at 35 so that a wedge face 37 forces a constantly rotating pulley 24 against a friction wheel 26, Fig. 1. This drives the shaft 29 and feed wheel 57 which directs work to the knife. The handle 36 rotates in the grasp of the operator only as long as required. The knife 18 can be adjusted by screws 15, 19 in a head 10. A presser foot 58 lies behind the feed wheel 57 and is adjustable on a strap 43 by a screw passing through a slot 60 and a vertical adjusting screw 61 which has a flange 62 slidable in a groove in the upper end of the presser foot. A circular work support 63 is arranged beneath the feed wheel and knife and has a spindle 64 running on a ball race. The upper end of a bushing 65 includes a projection 68 affording a mounting for an edge gauge 69. Vertical adjustment of the support is possible by a screw 73. The work contacting portion of the gauge is located almost opposite, but preferably a little in advance of, the axis of the work support, while the knife edge at 21 is positioned just beyond this axis. This effects almost automatic positioning of the work. U.S.A. Specifications 1,838,708 and 1,902,725 are referred to.
