Abstract
551,252. Drawing. PYROTENAX, Ltd., and LEWIS, J. G. Aug. 11, 1941, No. 10182. [Class 83 (iv)] A gripping device for use in drawing wire, rod, tube or cable, particularly cables comprising tubes filled with powdered magnesium &c. as insulation, is arranged to permit free forward movement of the rod &c. under recoil at the moment of liberation from the die. Rods A<SP>1</SP> connected to the draw bench terminate in a coned member A in which slide two or more correspondingly coned jaws B, closed on the rod by an actuator D sliding on the rods A<SP>1</SP> and connected to the jaws by springy rods C formed at the actuation end into interlaced helices that may be of non-uniform pitch. The jaws are thus permitted slight relative freedom of movement both longitudinally and laterally. In a modification the jaws are connected to the actuator tube by rigid members D<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, having double bends C<SP>2</SP> received in slots in the tube permitting the required degrees of freedom. A head D<SP>2</SP> on the tube serves as a guide for the rods C. Other modifications for use with a gripper connected to the drawing means by a single rod have the jaws connected to the actuator by rods with coiled ends. In one form for thin jaws the ends of the coils are connected to a common abutment and as arranged for two jaws the coils are integral. In another form rigid rods K, Fig. 5, have hooklike extensions K<SP>1</SP> received in slits J<SP>1</SP> in the actuator J which slides on the angle draw-rod H. A spring L acts on the extension K<SP>1</SP> through a sliding abutment.
