550,441. Metallic resinates. HERCULES POWDER CO. Sept. 22,1941, No. 12259. Convention date, March 27, 1941. [Classes 1 (iii) and 95] [Also in Group IV] A water-insoluble metallic resinate, e.g. of calcium, barium, strontium, zinc, lead, cobalt, manganese, copper, aluminium, nickel or iron is produced by reacting polymerized rosin, or a water-soluble salt of polymerized rosin with a metallic compound capable of forming an insoluble salt of the polymerized rosin. For example, a metal acetate may be slowly added to a fused polymerized rosin raised to a high temperature, or an alkali may be neutralized with rosin to form an aqueous solution and zinc acetate added to form a precipitate of the resinates. Also polymerized rosin may be dissolved in an organic solvent and a metal salt or oxide added in the solid form, or in a solution or a slurry. The polymerized rosin may be such that its melting point lies between 90‹ and 175‹C. The substances produced may be used as driers in paints, varnishes and printing inks. They may also be used in combination with such cellulose derivatives as ethyl cellulose and resins in paints, varnishes &c.
