Abstract

566,718. Silvering ; extracting silver. JOHNSON, MATTHEY, & CO., Ltd., BOX, E. R., and WYETH, E. J. Sept. 7, 1943, No. 14624. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] The surfaces of non-metallic articles such as glass, mica, porcelain, earthenware or electrical insulating materials, are silvered by applying by painting, spraying or printing a paste consisting of finely-divided silver, a fusible flux in a combustible organic medium, the coated article then being fired to burn away the organic matter and leave a firmly adherent silver layer. The paste may be prepared by grinding precipitated metallic silver with a flux in an organic painting, spraying or printing medium, the spraying medium being a solution of cellulose nitrate in amyl acetate, the painting medium a solution of colophony in pure turpentine and silk screen printing medium a solution of cellulose nitrate in amyl lactate. When the paste is required for printing the medium may be any of the usual oils used in making printers' or lithographic inks. To retard the rate of drying pure oil may 'be added. The finelydivided silver may be prepared by treating solutions of silver salts, e.g. oxides, carborates or oxalates, with a metallic reducing agent such as zinc powder, inorganic agents such as soluble hypopliosphates or hydrosulphites, titanous salts and alkaline hydrogen peroxide solutions or organic agents such as formaldehyde, formic acid and alkaline tartrate or citrate solutions. The firing temperature is usually 500-700‹ C.
