Abstract

550,433. Electric resistance heaters. MORPHYRICHARDS, Ltd., and MORPHY, D. W. Aug. 21, 1941, No. 10673. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] An electric heating element consists of a thin sheet of iron-nickel-chromium alloy having parallel slots a, b extending nearly across it from opposite edges alternately. The two ends 3, 4 are bent through openings in a plate 1 of mica or micamite to form terminals, and a second plate 2 is applied to cover the element. Owing to the fragility of the heating element, the slots a, b are first punched in a sheet sufficiently wide to close them at both ends, and a supporting film of mica or micamite is applied to one or both sides. The margins of the metal sheet are then cut off on both sides sufficiently to open alternate slots. The resistance of the element may be varied by stopping short of one end when removing the margins, so that some slots remain closed. In the initial punching operation sets of slots for a number of elements are formed in a single large sheet and at the same time the individual sheets are cut ready for marginal trimming. The heating element is suitable for flat irons, kettles, or the like.
