Abstract

[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A hydraulic coupling of the type comprising vaned driving and driven elements forming a toroidal working circuit is provided with cooling means consisting of metal vanes 56 bent up from an annular sheet of metal and a solenoid 57 also formed of a single sheet of metal is secured to the vanes 56 by tabs 58 on the vanes which are bent over slots in the shroud. The coupling is so mounted that all members of the seal and the main bearing and shaft thereof may be readily inspected and repaired, and the seal is provided with pressure relief means opening however at a higher pressure than a pressure relief valve 47 incorporated in the bearings. The driving vanes 17 are attached to a shell 15 welded to an outer shell 12 connected to a casting 11 bolted to the drive shaft 10. The shell 12 is welded to a shell 13' to form a toroidal chamber, and the driven member of the coupling comprises an inner shell 18 fitted with vanes 19, the shell 18 being riveted to a forged hub 20 formed with splines 21 which receive external splines 24 on a shaft 23 formed with a flange 36 to which is secured a flywheel 37 for driving a friction or like clutch for driving the output shaft 38 which is mounted in the shaft 23. The shaft 23 is mounted in bearings 26, 27. The bearings 26 are held in place between a snap ring 35 and a washer 30 held in place by a nut 31 which is accessible through apertures 59 in the flywheel 37 which also facilitate entry of cooling air. The bearing is sealed by a ring 40 which is urged against a hardened surface 39 by a ring 41 pressed by a spring 43 and connected to washer 30 by a fluid-tight bellows 42. The spring 43 is of such strength that the relief valve 47 opens to permit of the escape of vapour to a passage 53 leading to the crank case before the seal opens. By unscrewing nut 31 the shaft 23 can be withdrawn to the right taking with it the bearing 26, seal, and flywheel. The end 32 of the shaft 23 is withdrawn from the bearing 27 which is not withdrawn by the action of the nut 31.
