Abstract

549,717. Electricity supply; automatic control systems for synchronous dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 8, 1941, No. 10108. Convention date, Aug. 10, 1940. [Class 38 (iv)] Voltage.-The stability of a synchronous machine when under load is ensured by means depending on the loading of the machine which prevents the reduction of its excitation below an adequate value. The throttle valve 5 of the prime mover is coupled to a rheostat 13 in the exciting circuit, whereby the excitation is increased proportionately with the kilowatt load and a switch 19 is opened as soon as the throttle reaches a load position whereby a limit switch 18 in circuit with the motor operating the field rheostat is rendered operative, the limit defined being such as will provide no load excitation. The usual low and high limit switches 21, 22 respectively are operated in common with the limit switch 18 by a cam 20 attached to the moving element of the rheostat. The operating motor may be energized by manual switches 15, 16 and/or by a voltage responsive relay 25.
