Abstract

549,230. Coating electric conductors by extrusion. OKONITE GO. April 9, 1942, No. 4683. Convention date, May 21, 1941. [Class 87 (ii)] Thermoplastic material, such as plasticized cellulose aceto-butyrate or polyethylene, which when heated to an appropriate temperature is brought to the viscous-liquid state, is so heated and extruded by gas pressure through a die 18 around a continuously-advancing electric conductor 14. The material, as powder or liquid, is fed from a hopper 2 by a rotating valve 6 into a heated chamber 10 whence it is extruded by nitrogen or other inert gas introduced through a pipe 12. The chamber 10 is heated electrically or by a steam jacket, e.g. 400‹F. The conductor 14 may be preheated to the temperature of the extruded material, as by passage through a heating chamber.
