[Class 51 (ii)] An electric furnace of the are type comprising a cylindrical body 1 mounted on rollers 2 and tilted by an electric motor 7 and drive chain 8 is provided with' a fixed arcuate roof 4 which closes an aperture 3 in the body 1 and supports electrodes 5 which are raised and'lowered by a motor 6. The clearance space between the body and roof is sealed at the sides by wedge. shape segments 14 which are inserted between arcuate flanges 15 and the roof, and at the ends by flaps (not shown) suspended from the roof and resting against the body. The body is provided with a spout 9 and slagging aperture 10 closed by a hinged flap 11.
