Abstract
548,635. Flexible tubes. FIREPROOF TANKS, Ltd., QUINN, N. G., and TEW, R. SMALLMAN-. April 17, 1941, No. 5013. [Class 99 (ii)] A flexible tube for conveying fuel or oil in aircraft, land vehicles or boats is provided with a reinforcement consisting of an open helix 1 formed from a synthetic resin, such as polyvinyl chloride, which upon fracturing or disintegrating does not damage the other parts of the tube. As shown, the helix 1 is covered by a layer 2 of helically wound tape, petrol-proof layers 3 of fibrous cellulose, which may be cemented together, a helix 4 of thin string, and a resilient layer 5 of tough rubber cemented to the cellulose layer 3. The layer 5 tends to seal a puncture such as a bullet hole, and is surrounded by a helical winding 6 of string and a cemented covering 7 of rubberized fabric, rubberized braiding or wire braiding. A second helix of plastic material may be arranged on the covering 7 with its convolutions lying between those of the helix 1. This and the helix 1 may be formed by winding on a heated or cooled mandrel. The Provisional Specification states also that the tube may have between the cellulose layer and the tough rubber tube a layer of sponge rubber and a thin layer of vulcanized rubber as described in Specification 543,005, [Group XXIX], and a layer of petrol-proof cellulosic compound or derivative within the inner helix.
