Abstract
548,483. Making gas cylinders. BRIDGES, W. Oct. 6, 1941, No. 12874. Addition to 544,952. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Soldering.-In making a wire reinforced cylinder by hooking the end of the wire round a projection on a ring carried by the cylinder and then winding the wire round the cylinder and securing the other end to another projection on the same ring or to another ring at the opposite end of the cylinder, as described in the parent Specification, the turns are secured together by rotating the cylinder in a hot solder bath and brushing the winding with flux until the solder flows evenly thereamong. The wire may consist of piano wire so as to reinforce a cylinder containing compressed air, oxygen &c., against fracture from projectiles as well as internal pressure. The ends of the reinforcement, which is preferably of tinned wire, may be secured to lugs 14a, 14b both on one of the rings 11 or one on ring 11 and the other on ring 12. The lugs are bent down after hooking the ends of the wire thereon. Finally the flanges on the rings.are turned over the end windings. The cylinder is then placed between an adjustable centre 24 and a chuck 25 carried by a frame 23 which is provided with a pair of handles 42, 30 so that it may be lifted over a solder bath. The sides 23a rest on the flanges 27 of the solder bath and the sides 23b have bolts 28 engaging the flanges. The cylinder is rotated with the wire reinforcement dipping in the solder, by driving the chuck 25 through a chain and sprockets from a handle 41. The chuck spindle is carried by ball and thrust bearings in the support 32 carried by the frame 23. The solder bath is heated preferably electrically and a brush dipped in a flux bath preferably associated with the solder bath, is applied to the reinforcement until the solder flows evenly among the windings. The cylinder is finally washed in a hot water bath. Specifications 548,480, 548,481 and 548,482 are referred to.
