Abstract
548,480. Tension arrangements for winding wire &c. BRIDGES, W. April 7 1941. No. 4593. [Class 120 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] Apparatus for winding a wire or other filament on a rotatable body such as a tube or cylinder, comprises a brake member rotated by the filament as it passes from a supply, a second member supported for rising and falling movements by the bight of the filamens in its passage from the brake to the body and a connection between the second member and the brake for adjusting the latter as the second member rises or falls to adjust the braking effort so as to counteract tension variations. The cylinder 7 to be reinforced, such, as a gas cylinder as described in Specification 544,952, [Group XXII], has its plain hemi-spherical end placed in the hemi-spherical end 9a of a hollow chuck 9 carried by the face plate 4 of a lathe and the other end with filling neck 8 in a chuck 11 removably mounted on a' stepped sleeve 11a freely rotated on ball bearings on a spindle 13 projecting from the tailstock 5. The wire 25 is wound between rings 62, 63 fitting on the cylinder the distance between the rings being determined by removable spacing rings 9c, 11c, carried by the chucks 9,11. The wire is carried by a spool 24 mounted on an upstanding plate 15 fixed to the lathe saddle 2. The spool is is provided with extensions 26 clamped between the inclined faces of a flange 20 on a sleeve 19 and a screwed collar 27, the sleeve being rotatable on a fixed spindle 18 provided with an enlargement 29 and secured by a nut 28 through a spacing member 23 to the plate 15. The other end of the sleeve 19 engages a thumb race 30 against which presses a spring 31 adjustable by the nut 33 so as to vary the tension required to drag the wire off the spool to prevent over-running. The wire is led from the spool round a groove in a brake drum 34 and then under a pulley 40 carried by a parallel pair of weighted arms 47, over an idle pulley 41 and the end is secured to one of the lugs 65 on the ring 62. The face plate is rotated to the saddle traversed by a lead screw 6 to coil the wire on the cylinder. In order to maintain the tension constant one end of the brake band 36 is secured to a pin 53 fixed in an arm 54 and the other end is anchored to a bolt 55 passing through a fixed U-shaped bracket 56 and serving as the pivot of the arm 54. The arm 54 is acted on by an adjustable spring 60 to press it against a pin 58 on one of the arms 47, which are pivoted at 48. The weight 41 is connected by a U-bracket 45 to the spindle 46 at the free ends of the arms 47. If the tension decreases below the normal the weight 51 falls and lowers the arms 47 and tends to bring the pin 58 away from the inclined side of the arm 54. The arm 54 is pressed against the pin 58 by the spring 60 and so tightens the brake band which thus increases the tension again. If the tension increases above the normal the weight is raised and the pin 58 moves the arm 54 to relax the brake band again. The saddle carries a tool rest 3 provided with a pair of arms 68 carrying a guide roller 66 for keeping the turns of wire in contact with each other. When the roller 66 reaches the ring 63, the tool rest 3 is moved transversely by a hand wheel 69 and screw to bring the roller out of contact with the wire so that the last turn may be applied against the flange on ring 63. The apparatus is then stopped and the tool rest racked along longitudinally by a handle 70 until the roller is again placed on the leading side of the wire, whereupon coiling is resumed with the saddle traversed in the reverse direction. When the wire reaches the ring 62, the apparatus is stopped and the other end of the wire is secured to the lug 651.
