Winding-machines; creel arrangements; tension arrangements; thread guides.-In a machine for winding wire or the like of the kind wherein the material passes around and rotates a guide wheel mounted on a stationary screw to effect the traverse, the guide wheel I is stepped and engages a fine screw H on a rod G, and the wire is passed in the reverse direction therearound at the end of each traverse. The rod G is carried by a tube G<1> mounted in a sleeve J, so that it may be bodily moved therein against a spring G<5> when it is desired to remove the guide wheel from proximity to the bobbin A, and is adjustable within the tube bv means of a coarse thread G<5> or by a simple clamp. A pin G<3> on a collar G<2> on the tube G<1> engages the end of the sleeve J or a hole G<4> therein, so as to adjust the guide wheel and give the necessary trailing action to the wire in each direction of traverse, as shown by the full ana chain lines in Fig. 2. The wire passes from a braked bobbin E over fair-leads F<1>, F<2>, and around pulleys F<3>, F<6> on pivoted members K, and its tension is adjusted by hand, as required, by varying the bight around the pulley F<6>. The winding-spindle B is operated by a handle C connected to a cyclometer B<2>, and is provided with insulated terminals B<4> for testing the coil during winding. The wire may be passed through a bath of varnish. Two screws and two guide wheels or guide wheels with double grooves may be used to wind two wires side by side. The Provisional Specification describes the provision of a set of screws of different pitch or of a set of pulleys to increase the range of adjustment.
