Abstract

548,358. Gripping devices. BUQUOR, A. P., and BUQUOR, J. L. April 4, 1941, No. 4548. [Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] An automatic clamp, particularly for applying to the wheel of a bogged vehicle for ready attachment of a haulage rope thereto, comprises two jaws 1, 2 hinged together at 5. Upstanding from each jaw at a point near the hinge is an off-set lug 10, 11 by outward pressure on which the jaws 1, 2 are caused to approach one another to grip the wheel tyre and rim. The said pressure is produced by a wedge member 14 carried rigidly on a cross-shaft 12 journlled loosely in the lugs 10, 11 and formed as a unit with a stirrup 13 to which the hauling rope is attached. The inturned ends 16, 17 of the jaws are differently shaped to facilitate application. Cushion plates 6, 7, 8, 9 are fixed on the jaws at points bearing on the pneumatic tyre. The swinging down of the stirrup 13 by the pull of the rope brings the wedge edges 15 between the lugs 10, 11 to force these apart. Stiffening webs 18, 19 may be provided to reinforce the jaws. A plurality of clamps may be arranged round a wheel to form a non-skid attachment, and other applications mentioned are timber haulage and debris clearance.
